Subcontracting to BIM Level 2
Towcester WRC
Project Overview
Level 2 BIM is distinguished by collaborative working and requires an information exchange process which is specific to that project and coordinated between various systems and project participants.
Any CAD software that each party uses must be capable of exporting to one of the common file formats such as IFC (Industry Foundation Class) or COBie (Construction Operations Building Information Exchange). This is the method of working that has been set as a minimum target by the UK government for all work on public-sector work.
STORTEC maintains a fully supported and subscribed SOLIDWORKS 3D CAD system for the design and virtual assembly of 3D models of our scope of works. 2D drawings are then generated from the 3D models to provide annotated information for Clients, suppliers and fabrication.
The Client provided and maintained the BIM 360 environment wherein they received the BIM information from all suppliers. STORTEC personnel had directed access to this environment and were required to upload documents and models for review and sharing
The various members of the Client design management team were able to access the data provided. Using the inbuilt BIM tools the reviewers can provide their feedback directly as comments on the drawings, fully traceable, accessible to all Team members.
The native SOLIDWORKS 3D models were uploaded in file formats compatible with the BIM environment so that all Team Members can view and interrogate the models.
The Client design Team combined all the information submitted from their suppliers into a detailed model of their entire project within the BIM Environment.
